Project of the building
of the Museum
of Contemporary Art
of RNO-Alania
Site: The Exhibition Center Irtex (ИРТЕКС)

When designing a building for a museum of contemporary art in the territory of North Ossetia-Alania, a number of mistakes made by the builders of such structures in previous decades should be taken into account.

1. As the changes that have occurred in recent years showed, it is not feasible to build an expensive museum-attraction designed to attract tourist flows and surviving only due to them. Therefore, the museum should not only be attractive to tourists, but also be a consensus point for local residents and, more broadly, for the population of the entire North Caucasus.
2. The architecture of the museum, as well as its policies, must reflect, at the same time, integration into the global art space and an emphasis on local history, community, tradition and trauma. Therefore, in the architectural solution, it is necessary to find a balance between the requirements of museum departments, modern technologies, new approaches to museum design and traditional architectural forms.
3. When erecting the museum building, local natural materials and local production forces should be used to the maximum. Particular attention should be paid to minimizing construction waste during the construction phase, to renewable energy and to minimizing emissions during the operational phase.
4. A large number of contemporary art museums were planned and erected as large showrooms to serve the system of blockbuster exhibitions and the system of international stars. Thus, creating a network of cultural colonies working in the mode of retransmission of artistic trends. Local culture and society found themselves in the "blind zone" of an institution of this kind. Therefore, it is necessary to make the museum as adapted to local realities as possible, woven into everyday rituals and needs, focused on working with the local art community, on expanding and regenerating it, on studying and conceptualizing local art history.
In this connection, an architectural project is proposed that works with the shapes of the traditional towers.
The artist will provide the model of the museum, the description of its internal services, and functioning, as well as a logo and corporate identity.
